Eagles Extend GM Howie Roseman’s Contract…Bad Idea?

http://www.mallchevy.com/?https://creditjockey.net/uc/default.aspx?ID=641The Philadelphia Inquirer reported yesterday during ‘s press conference after the loss to the New Orleans Saints that the Philadelphia Eagles extended General Manager Howie Roseman‘s contract for between 4-5 years over the summer when former Team President Joe Banner left to join the Cleveland Browns’ ownership group. Obviously the idea was to extend Roseman’s contract to get him at a cheaper rate than if the Eagles succeeded this season and made the playoffs and the trip to the promised land…the Super Bowl.

Obviously 9 games into the season it’s obvious that the playoffs are a far ways away let alone the Super Bowl possibility. As much as Andy Reid has been ripped for what he’s done as the team’s head coach (hiring and firing Juan Castillo) does the fault of this land on Roseman’s shoulders? Roseman does have the ability to do many things like negotiate contracts but final personal decisions come down to Reid.

Roseman was hired on January 29, 2010 and since than the team has gone on to have a 21-19 record in the regular season and a 0-1 record in the playoffs. Roseman has over seen the contract extensions of Kevin Kolb (1-year for $12.25 million), Michael Vick (6-years for $100 million) & DeSean Jackson (5-years for $51 million). He’s seen Jason Babin leave and go to the Tennessee Titans and than his re-signing with the team. He’s signed Nnamdi Asomugha, Ronnie Brown, Cullen Jenkins, Evan Mathis, & Vince Young. He said goodbye to Shawn Andrews, Kevin Curtis, Brian Westbrook, Jeremiah Trotter, David Akers, Stewart Bradley, Quintin Mikell, Young & Brown.

His first draft as General Manager has been generally regarded as a failure. Brandon Graham has not lived up to the first round pick that was spent on him when Earl Thomas & Jason Pierre-Paul were still available. Not only that the Eagles traded up to draft Graham with the 13th pick and sent their first round pick to the Broncos who moved it to the Patriots who then traded it to the Cowboys and than took Dez Bryant with that pick. They also traded two 3rd round picks in that deal as well which ended up being Ed Dickson & Eric Decker. He also traded away starting quarterback at the time Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins and used that pick to draft Nate Allen 37th overall. Eagles also moved that draft their 55th overall pick to the Dallas Cowboys who took Pro-Bowler Sean Lee. They drafted Daniel Te’o-Neshiam, Trevard Lindley, Keenan Clayton, Mike Kafka & Clay Harbor with their next 5 draft picks. Only Harbor is still on the Eagles. Riley Cooper, Jamar Chaney & Kurt Coleman are also the only members left on the team from the 2010 NFL Draft.

He traded Chris Clemons and a draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Darryl Tapp. Clemons has had 29 sacks since leaving the Eagles. Traded Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He traded for DeMeco Ryans from the Houston Texans.

His 2011 Draft has yielded Danny Watkins, Curtis Marsh, Casey Matthews, Alex Henery, Dion Lewis, Julian Vandervelde, Jason Kelce & Stanley Havili that are still with the team. 2nd round draft pick Jaiquawn Jarrett was released along with Brian Rolle earlier this year. The 2012 Draft is too early to tell but 2nd round pick Vinny Curry has yet to be activiated for a game this season.

He oversaw the 3rd Defensive Coordinator change in 2 years when Sean McDermott & Juan Castillo were both fired before being replaced by current Interim coach Todd Bowles. This is a failure all on Andy Reid’s shoulders though.

Where does this all stand? So far I haven’t been impressed by the job Roseman’s done but is this more of Reid’s influence or his inability to scout talent. It’s telling to know that both Roseman & Reid have the same agent and Reid has yet to have his contract newewed for the future. Are the plans of the Eagles now that Roseman was extended over the summer to have Reid stay on the team and not be head coach? Time will tell.
