According to a source close to HighPhive.net after losing out on outfielder B.J. Upton to division rival Atlanta Braves and Denard Span to also division rival the Washington Nationals the Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. spent a lot of time yesterday on the phone with super agent Scott Boras. Boras is the agent of what is in my opinion the best center fielder left available for the Phillies; Michael Bourn. It’s known well in baseball circles that the Phillies and Scott Boras haven’t got along well since last year’s mis-handling of whatever happened between them and Ryan Madson last year when a deal was announced as being completed before it was actually completed. Ryan Madson ended up signing with the Cincinnati Reds before blowing out his elbow and signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this offseason.
The Phillies need to fill a hole and it’s unlikely that Josh Hamilton will be signed by the Phillies anytime soon to add another power left handed bat in the lineup. Bourn was originally drafted by the Phillies in the 4th round and was part of the trade that brought Brad Lidge to the team before the 2008 season that led to the Phillies’ last World Championship. Bourn’s numbers dipped in terms of stolen bases last year and had trouble in the month of September hitting but still got on base at a .348 clip which is something the top of the Phillies lineup needs. Bourn had only 42 stolen bases last year which was his lowest amount since his first full-time season in 2008. He had a career high in home runs (9) and RBIs (57) last season and could provide a spark if Jimmy Rollins has to get dropped in the lineup.
No word yet on what exactly was said between Amaro & Boras but Amaro knows the market is thinning on Bourn and could use it to his advantage to get a better deal. The accelerated process of Amaro speaking off and on yesterday with Scott Boras is showing that Amaro knows now is the time to make a deal happen. Then again it is Scott Boras we’re talking about.Tags: agents, BJ Upton, Brad Lidge, Denard Span, free agency, Hot Stove, Jimmy Rollins, Josh Hamilton, Michael Bourn, MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Ruben Amaro Jr., Ryan Madson, Scott Boras
