It was announced tonight by the Philadelphia Flyers that Associate Captain Claude Giroux will be the Flyers Captain for the 2013 season. This move is not a surprise or a shock. Giroux will replace Chris Pronger who will most likely never play in the NHL again. Kimmo Timonen will be an “Associate Captain”. I quoted that because I’ve never heard of one and don’t know what exactly it means. Danny Briere & Scott Hartnell are the Assistant Captains.
Giroux will be the 19th Captain of the Philadelphia Flyers and he’s been groomed for this position since Paul Holmgren traded away Jeff Carter & former Captain Mike Richards before last season. Obviously it’s a shock that it’s happening this soon since Pronger was thought to have worn it for a much longer time but with the injury the time to move it to Giroux is now.
In Danny Briere news today he admitted that it’s very doubtful he’ll play the opening weekend of games when the Flyers open up the season Saturday against the Penguins at the Wells Fargo Center and Sunday when they travel to Buffalo. His wrist has not healed to the point where he can take a full on shot yet so it will be a little less than 48 games this season for the small scorer. It is not known if he will be ready to take on the Devils next week in New Jersey or when he’ll even begin to shoot.Tags: Captain, Chris Pronger, Claude Giroux, Danny Briere, Kimmo Timonen, Mike Richards, NHL, Paul Holmgren, Philadelphia Flyers, Scott Hartnell
