Coming off losing their first two games in a 48 game season the Philadelphia Flyers and Head Coach Peter Laviolette have decided a lineup change is in order. First and foremost the injury to Zac Rinaldo suffered Sunday against Buffalo have made the team call up Tye McGinn to replace him. Rinaldo suffered a thigh laceration from a skate that caused him to get 20 stitches. Also defenseman Kurtis Foster will have a “maintenance” day and Bruno Gervais will take his place as well.
Here are the lines tonight against the New Jersey Devils & goalie Martin Brodeur:
The big glaring change obviously is Jakub Voracek to the first line and Schenn back to the 3rd line centering McGinn & Simmonds. Schenn & McGinn worked together for the Phantoms this year on a line so it’s a move to get him on the ice with people he is familiar with playing. Voracek will give the top line a little more speed as the team waits for Danny Briere to get healthy and play. Briere practiced with the Flyers today but will not suit up.
On defense Gervais will pair up with Andrej Meszaros. The Flyers need to get a victory tonight to not start the season 0-3 and they should have a lot of motivation since the Devils defeated the Flyers last year in four straight games to win their 2nd round playoff series 4-1. Captain Claude Giroux leads the Flyers right now in Goals & Points with two each.
The Devils have only played one game this season and that was in New York against the Islanders on Saturday with a 2-1 victory. Travis Zajac scored the first goal for the team and David Clarkson scored the winner in the 3rd period. Martin Brodeur stopped 18 of 19 shots for the victory. This will be the Devils home opener.
Philadelphia has to show a marked improvement on the penalty kill and face off winning. The Flyers have 58 face off victories to 71 face off losses and Talbot was 0 for 3 in face offs against Buffalo but he will be a winger tonight with Laughton taking draws who went 4-5 in face offs. On the penalty kill in Buffalo the Sabres went 3 for 6 in the 5-2 loss. The Devils are 0-2 this season so far on the power play.
The game will begin at 7:30 PM tonight on Comcast Sportsnet & 93.3 WMMR.Tags: Bruno Gervais, Claude Giroux, New Jersey Devils, NHL, Peter Laviolette, Philadelphia Flyers, Tye McGinn
